Karen Roth recently retired as faculty in the University of Alaska’s College of Education after 20years of service. Prior to her university work, she taught elementary school in Washington, California, Montana, New Jersey, and Illinois, serving diverse learners in rural and urban school districts. Karen has worked on multiple grants partnering with Alaska Native educators with the goal of preparing culturally responsive teachers. Her primary research interests are culturally sustaining family-school partnerships, place-based education, and literacy instruction for social justice.
