Alaska Indigenous Teacher Initiatives at Troth Yeddha’ Campus


Alaska Native students make up 21% of Alaska’s K-12 population but only 5% of the teaching force. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Indigenous Teacher Initiatives are a set of interconnected efforts to increase the number of certificated Indigenous teachers in Alaska, via the Troth Yeddha’ campus and distance-learning throughout the state. This proposed panel presentation will share efforts to increase Alaska Native capacity for self-determination in the schooling process through: a) supporting teaching certification/degree completion of Indigenous students; b) Indigenizing components of teacher certification coursework; c) partnering with rural school districts; and d) developing stacked degree programs to provide incremental pathways.
