Pedagogy As a Continuation of War by Other Means


Braiding insight from various traditions of Indigenous, humanist, and structuralist critical theory, this panel begins with a simple premise: The nation-state is not born with the cessation of war; it is codified in the mud and blood of war. From this perspective, as evinced by the history of Federal Indian Law and boarding schools, the United States comes into existence as a perpetual war waged against Indigenous peoples and bodies. Culturally responsive education must begin with this sobering premise that education has historically functioned not as a solution to war but as a continuation of it by other means.
