Using Thinking Routines to Promote Place-Based Education and Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices

Participants will learn how to utilize Thinking Routines to help students develop critical thinking skills. The Thinking Routines were developed through Project Zero at Harvard University. We will explore how to use these routines with a place-based focus and develop a culturally responsive approach to lessons and teaching. I will present some lessons and activities in the unit I developed in Sealaska Heritage’s Through the Cultural Lens program as a model. Teachers will also have time to plan how they might utilize these practices in their own teaching.
