Who am I, and who are my students?: Growing Cultural Responsiveness Through Immersion at Culture Camp

For more than 15 years, the Alaska Humanities Forum has structured its educator programming around in-person immersions at culture camps across the state. Teachers use these experiences at culture camp to not only connect with a region’s cultures, people, and land, but also as jumping-off points for reflecting on their own cultural assumptions and biases. In this session, we’ll talk about the relationship between place-based learning and growth of cultural awareness and responsiveness, through the lens of participants in the Forum’s ECCI (Educator Cross-Cultural Immersion) and C3 (Creating Cultural Competency) programs.
