Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) acknowledges the extraordinary role educators offer to students’ holistic success—intellectually, emotionally, and culturally. SHI requests the nomination of any exceptional educator who inspires, connects, challenges, and imparts knowledge while leading a profound impact. By educator, SHI recognizes that learning occurs in many spaces, therefore, by educator, we include the following roles: teacher, educational support staff, administrators, coaches, or community members whose work is of such quality to merit recognition and award.

Awards from three categories will be presented during the Our Cultural Landscape Conference:

SHI’s Distinguished Educator Award — that recognizes an educator’s intentional weaving of ways of knowing throughout lessons and classroom that reflect our students, through place-based and culturally relevant beliefs and practices, while reinforcing our students' capabilities of achievement.

SHI’s Distinguished Leadership Award — that recognizes outstanding leadership at a school level, district level or community level that exemplifies collaboration, co-creation of environments that are safe, yet challenging, where success if defined through learning, and meaningful mentorship.

SHI’s Community-Based Learning Teaching Awards — which recognizes that production of knowledge is not limited to the classroom but can occur anywhere and celebrates achievements in teaching that honor SHI’s value of cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding through community outreach or as public service.

Awardees are offered attendance to conference with paid travel expenses and a monetary stipend.
