Culturally Responsive Navigation – Patricia L. Dick

sealaska

This presentation shares how to teach students marine navigation skills through Tlingit literature that drives “hands on” lessons in NOAA chart reading (including symbols and meanings of navigation markers), figuring latitude/longitude to find points, finding points using latitude/longitude, compass reading, making a sailing plan, learning triangulation and Tlingit place names. Basically we read an old Tlingit navigation story, learn to navigate, then get in a boat and navigate through the story. Participants in this session will learn how this unit is taught in Sitka integrating it in all the core subjects (language arts, science, social studies, math, and PE).
