Whether creating newly-offered courses that focus on culturally relevant and place-based perspectives, or improving the content of existing courses, it is critical for educators to purposefully increase the cultural relevance of courses offered at all grade levels in their schools.

For this presentation, Gillian Edwards, Kerri Deal, and Rebecca Bowlen will illustrate their journey from enrolling in SHI’s Through the Cultural Lens course (Spring 2021) to where they are now, and how their experiences have impacted their learning and teaching with culturally-relevant and place-based education. The three presenters will share the projects they created while enrolled in the Cultural Lens course: Gillian – elementary school; Kerri – middle school; Rebecca – high school. Additionally, they will share how the Cultural Lens course has inspired them to further engage professionally as educators in Southeast Alaska.
