Tribal Values and Special Education – Michelle Charles

The focus of the unit is to provide students with special needs the ability to be included in culture classes to the extent they are able to. The special education population is often an overlooked group of students, and this unit will help provide the students with the same modified experience as their peers. Students will be able to identify tribal values in a meaningful way to them. The unit’s focus is twofold, a connection with their culture and presented in a way that makes the material understandable for those students who are non-verbal and have low cognitive skills. The unit will be taught using the students’ senses: visual and tactile, and expressing themselves through either receptive language or expressive language as a way of demonstrating their knowledge.
