In this session participants learn the importance of working with cultural specialists and authentic cultural/historical objects through performance literacy, the process of teaching students to write and perform their own stories. This process is modeled and taught to participants so that they learn how to create and tell a story based on Indigenous knowledge systems, ways of knowing, cultural items and local art. The activities teach educators how to facilitate children’s oral and written language development, increase listening and reading comprehension, and inspire a love and appreciation of local knowledge.
