Weaving Our Elders’ Knowledge into the General Education Classroom – Laurie Duncan

We live and teach on Indigenous land, and it is our duty as educators and as cultural specialists to expose both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to a classroom that is warm, welcoming, and as saturated in culture as we can make it with place-based education. But what could that look like? For most of us (and definitely for me!) this concept can be uncomfortable and feel as though there is no real starting place in the midst of all the other standards and curriculums we are responsible for, but we are just as much students as our children are in this realm, and together we can work to incorporate Indigenous language, culture, art, values, and individuals into our classrooms, starting with small steps and moving into leaps and bounds!
